Delivery van accidents

Delivery drivers work fast, on tight schedules, in neighborhoods. That creates risk, and responsibility.

Why delivery vans crash

  • Pressure to hit a number of stops per hour
  • Looking at a scanner or phone for the next address
  • Double-parking, sudden stops and backing up
  • New or seasonal drivers with little training

Who is responsible?

Many large delivery networks use independent contractor companies. The van may carry one company's logo while the driver works for a smaller business. That doesn't mean no one is responsible. It means we have to find out who employed the driver, who owned the van and which policies apply.

Tip: Photograph the van's doors and back, including any small print: company name, DOT number, phone number and van number.

Pedestrians and parked cars

Many delivery van crashes happen at low speed in neighborhoods: hitting a pedestrian, a child on a bike or a parked car while backing up. Those cases count too, and injuries can be serious.
